WINA: THE GROUNDBREAKING ADVERTISING FESTIVAL WITH FREE ENROLMENT
Following on from the 2017 edition of WINA, which took place in Barcelona (Spain) and Santiago (Chile), this global advertising festival for independent, multinational agencies and networks has decided to unite the prize-giving ceremony, closing party and academic spaces under one roof. The striking Los Angeles Convention Center has been chosen to play host to the world’s leading independent, multinational agencies and networks from May 30th to June 1st.
In addition to confirming the 2018 headquarters the festival organizers are announcing several new developments and assuring, of course, that enrolment will remain free of charge, with only the winners paying prizewinning rights.
CHANGES TO CATEGORIES
Radio was the category which decreased the most, and Interactive and Media were those that experienced highest growth; Pharma, Kids and Better World will appear as categories for the first time in 2018. These are some of the new developments that will have a strong influence on the festival’s future, with WINA’s CMO, Mauricio Rodríguez Vargas, stating that “at WINA we keep track of what’s happening in the industry and monitor the budget allocation trends of advertisers, in order to discover the current state of play in advertising expenditure. Based on that, we aim to find a balance in terms of the number of prizes awarded”.
Better World is expected to be the festival’s flagship category from 2018 onwards. Social has been merged with it to create a single category which brings together the best pieces of social, civic and environmental work that seek to make the world a better place. This will be the only category that always awards Grand Prix, regardless of the approval of the president of the judging panel. Through this initiative, WINA aims to encourage agencies to focus their efforts on global thinking.
VICE-PRESIDENCIES WITH ONE JUDGING ADVERTISER PER CATEGORY
WINA has redesigned its judging format for 2018, creating the position of judging vice-president which will be led by an advertiser. However, the positions of judging president and the other 3 judges will continue to be filled by directors from advertising agencies. Through this academic launch, the festival aims to enable major advertisers to discover the work of independent, multinational agencies and networks first hand.
These judges will welcome the 2018 edition of the festival with a 72% increase in the number of agencies enrolled. WINA’s third edition has set a target of doubling this figure, while maintaining a defined limit of prizes awarded, with Mauricio Rodríguez concluding that “some international festivals hand out over 3000 recognitions per year, more than three times as many as the Olympic Games! This is something we don’t agree with. When festivals award prizes en masse, those prizes start to lose value”.
Local and international judges, businesspeople from the industry and creative directors will come together for 2 days of conferences and workshops, and a trade fair, closing party and prize-giving ceremony in Los Angeles, at the only global festival for independent, multinational agencies and networks and the only one to offer free case enrolment.
